prospective graduate students

How to Apply
Applications should be submitted online through UCR’s Graduate Division. Prospective students are also encouraged to complete the Preliminary Information Form. Used internally by the Department, the form allows our Graduate Advisor to consider candidates’ interests and qualifications early in the recruitment season.

To receive fullest consideration for financial assistance, completed applications and all supporting documents, including GRE scores, must be received by 11 December 2009.  This is the deadline for both domestic and international applicants. We will accept applications until 5 February 2010 for international students and 19 March 2010 for domestic students, but completed files received after 11 December  2009 are less likely to receive consideration for financial support.

Admissions requirements include a minimum 3.20 Grade Point Average (GPA) and a minimum score of 1100 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Teaching Assistantships, Fellowships, and Financial Aid
The Department supports students through teaching assistantships and fellowships, both awarded on a competitive basis.

Teaching Assistant duties include the supervised instruction of lower-division language courses and the assistant instruction of courses in literature and culture.  The stipend is approximately $12,500 per year.  Out-of-state domestic students may apply for non-resident tuition fee fellowships covering all or part of the non-resident tuition fee.

Fellowships are also available, ranging from the prestigious Chancellor's Distinguished Fellowship ($10,000 annual stipend in addition to fees) to the Humanities Predoctoral Fellowship, the Dean's Fellowship, and the Department's Barricelli Award, among others.

More information on admissions and fellowship consideration is here.

The University’s financial aid website is here.

Living Accommodations
University housing is available in dormitories, University owned apartments, and married student housing.  There is also abundant reasonably-priced off-campus housing within walking distance of the campus . For more information on housing, visit the Housing website (link to http://www.housing.ucr.edu/).

Application Deadlines For Domestic Students
To qualify for financial support, applicants must apply for admission in the Fall Quarter. The deadline is 11 December 2009 (see above, “How to Apply”).  Students who wish to be considered for admission without financial support may also submit applications by 1 May for fall admission, 1 September for winter admission, and 1 December for spring admission.

International Students
International students follow the same procedures and are governed by the same regulations as domestic applicants with the following important exceptions.

International applicants and permanent residents whose native language is not English need a minimum of 550 on TOEFL or 213 on the computer-based version of the same exam.  International applicants should arrange to take the examination in their home country by contacting:

Educational Testing Service
P. O. Box 6151
Princeton, NJ   08540-6151
http://etsis4.ets.org/tcenter/cbt_fr.cfm

The date of the test should be no more than two years before the intended quarter of admission.

Application deadlines for international students are February 1 (January 5 for admission with fellowship support) for the fall quarter, July 1 for the winter quarter, and October 1 for the spring quarter.
